Vision

Investing in the Wakefield community to develop a Centre for Positive Ageing.
Bringing people together in an inspirational environment to encourage creativity, learning and growth.
Providing a carbon neutral office space for staff and visitors.
History
Age UK Wakefield District took ownership of the Lock Lane Community Centre in 2010, continuing to hire it to public groups and using it for staff meetings.
In 2020 the national lockdown changed the way we all work. Age UK Wakefield District made the decision to protect the older people we support by closing our public spaces and instead, meeting people in their own homes wearing full PPE and testing regularly.
The building has remained in use for staff but needs a significant structural and cosmetic maintenance work in order to fulfil it's potential as a Centre for Positive Ageing

Plans

Working with staff, partners, funders, and the older community of Wakefield, architects from firm have developed a first draft of plans.
Ensuring the building offers the best in modern design, functionality and practicality, Age UK Wakefield District aspire to provide an Ageism free destination for people to learn, develop and experience wellbeing.

Wellbeing

Wellbeing has never been more important, the lasting effects of the national lockdown mean that self care and wellbeing are a priority promoted to staff, partners and the older people we support.
The Age UK Wakefield District mental health team work within the community to promote wellbeing, explore methods of relaxation and open conversations about mental health.

Positive Ageing

What is Positive Ageing? There are many negative stereotypes that are commonly thought of when picturing older people but they fail to describe the range of life experience, knowledge and skills of our older community. Our goal is to identify the strengths in ageing and the benefits to keeping healthy and active in later life. Through providing a Centre for Positive Ageing equipped with resources, we hope to encourage meaningful contribution to society, positive wellbeing and a healthy lifestyle.Negative stereotypes of ageingPreconceptions about old-age impact upon our experience of it. Lack of self confidence due to negative stereotypes can have a very real impact on how people live their later life. Believing physical and mental decline are inevitable stages of ageing means you're much more likely to accept these health issues than seek to improve.Positive aspects of ageingAgeing does of course bring inevitable changes to the mind and body, not all of them positive. And despite thinking positively, we are unlikely to become a champion diver or Fomula 1 racing car driver in these later years. But by focusing on the positive aspects of age, and concentrating on what we still can do, rather than our limitations, it’s possible to maintain a much healthier, more active and more more positive later life
